Moore’ Power To You: Why the Allen-to-Moore Duo Will Light Up the NFL
Every quarterback says the right things when a new weapon shows up. But in Buffalo, for once, the cliché might actually be true.
We’ve all heard it before. The standard ‘PR speak’ that every quarterback echoes when a new weapon is added to their offense in the off-season. “He’s a team-first guy….” blah blah blah “it’s hard not to get excited,” … blah blah blah, “he’s a real hard worker,” etc. It’s a necessary but painfully boring act in pro football that is arguably more cliché than this entire list combined.
Josh Allen is no different. While his ‘Superman’ play on the field is anything but cliché, Allen goes into full ‘Clark Kent’ mode when discussing the addition of DJ Moore.
Sometimes however, cliché notwithstanding, what you see – or in this instance, what you hear – is what you get.
In fact, there’s a very strong case for the people of Western New York to be ‘moore’ than optimistic about their biggest off-season acquisition. With high expectations building in Buffalo, fans are already gearing up for this explosive new era by checking out the latest Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen, and DJ Moore gear to match the team’s high-octane energy. But before making our case for why this duo will dominate, let’s address the biggest reason against our stance.
Overcoming DJ Moore’s Statistical Slump
Unequivocally, Moore is coming off of a down year statistically, recording career lows in receptions and yards. Then again, so was Randy Moss in 2006 before joining the Patriots the following off-season and we all know what happened there. At 29, Moore is nearly the same age (Moss was 30), and, like Moss in 2007, entering his 9th season while also largely being dismissed as washed. The lesson: Past performance does not indicate future results.
Like the dynamo that was the Randy Moss and Tom Brady connection, Moore has never played with a QB as gifted as Josh Allen. The closest he came was an ascending but still-unproven Caleb Williams over the last two seasons in Chicago – ’emerging,’ not elite – and before that, a revolving door of mediocre, if not flat-out awful, signal-callers across his years in Carolina and Chicago. And yet, in spite of the aforementioned lack of passing talent around him, Moore was able to post multiple 1,000-plus receiving yard seasons.
Lest we forget the fact – and I’m certain no one in Buffalo has – that while in Carolina, Moore’s offensive coordinator was none other than new Bills head coach Joe Brady. The ‘moore’ than obvious implication being that Brady knows how to get the most out of him.
The Josh Allen Effect: Elevating the Passing Game
Oh, there’s another player Brady has exhibited a penchant for bringing out the best in – Josh Allen. Since Brady took over as Buffalo’s offensive coordinator in November of 2023, the Bills offense has been among the NFL’s elite, with Allen simultaneously solidifying his status as the best football player on the planet. There’s a reason why he played such a significant role in hiring Brady. It has only gotten better with Brady – and who better to take Allen and the team to the next level than someone who has already done so, now steering the whole operation as head coach.
The Joe Brady Connection
Now add in the combination of an elite pass catcher like DJ Moore, plus the all-world superman talent of Josh Allen, plus Joe Brady‘s intimate knowledge and proven record of success with both, and you have something that equals anything but cliché. You have explosive playmaking ability and a duo that could take the top off of opposing defenses all season long.
But as the cliché goes, only time will tell.
