The Jameis Effect: Three Touchdowns, Two Interceptions and First Place in the NFC East [Giants 36, Cardinals 24]

Every Jameis Winston game comes with both halves of the deal. On Sunday, the Giants got the whole thing, and for the first time since 2015 they have the division to themselves.

Last week, I was questioning if I could even throw. This week, I’ve got people talking about the Jameis Winston experience again.

There is a version of Jameis Winston that coaches spend careers trying to coach out of him: the quarterback who sees a window closing and throws into it anyway. There is also a version that throws for 5,000 yards. They are the same person, and they always show up together. Sunday at MetLife Stadium, both of them did.

Winston completed 18 of 29 passes for 250 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions as the Giants beat Arizona 36-24 and moved to 3-1. It was, in the words of NFL.com’s recap headline, the full Jameis Winston experience. A week earlier he had thrown for 117 yards in a 12-7 grinder. On Sunday night, he was telling reporters he was heating up.

The Swings

Every Turn of a 36-24 Afternoon

Two interceptions, two Arizona scores, two answers. Follow the column on the right.

Final playDeonte Banks picks off Jacoby Brissett and goes 98 yardsNYG 36, ARI 24

Read that table from top to bottom and you have the entire argument for Jameis Winston in seven rows. He opened with a touchdown to a rookie who had never scored in the NFL, then found Malik Nabers, who finished with six catches for 116 yards, for 25 more. Then came the bill: an in-route forced into Denzel Burke at the end of the half, and a ball that sailed between two receivers to Budda Baker on the first series of the third quarter. Arizona turned them into ten points and a 24-19 lead.

What happened next is the part that gets lost in the box score. Winston walked back out and led a 76-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown to Theo Johnson. The Giants never trailed again. Dominic Zvada added a 52-yarder with 2:11 left, and Deonte Banks ended it by intercepting Jacoby Brissett on fourth down and returning it 98 yards as time expired.

The result: sole possession of first place in the NFC East for the first time since November 2015.

The Effect

Thirty and Thirty, and Nobody Else Ever

This is not a bad week. It is a career, and the career has a record nobody else holds.

In 2019, with Tampa Bay, Winston threw for 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He remains the only quarterback in NFL history to throw at least 30 of each in the same season. It is the single most Jameis statistic that exists, and it is usually cited as a punchline. It should be cited as a description. Coaches who start Winston are buying a specific product, and that product throws the ball down the field whether or not the coverage agrees.

He knows it, too. In December 2024, playing for Cleveland in Denver, he threw for 497 yards and four touchdowns, along with three interceptions, two of them returned for scores. His postgame assessment, per Sports Illustrated, was perfect: “I’m just praying to the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes.”

Which brings us to the clearest illustration of the Jameis Effect you will find. Compare his two starts since taking over the Giants:

The safe week produced 12 points and a nervous win over Tennessee. The aggressive week produced 36 points and first place. More touchdowns, more interceptions, a higher passer rating, and three times the scoring. If you want to know why a team keeps playing a quarterback who throws interceptions, that table is the answer.

The Hot Take

The interceptions are not the cost of Jameis Winston. They are the price of the touchdowns, and a team in first place should pay it gladly. The Giants scored 12 points the week he played it safe and 36 the week he played like himself. A quarterback who never throws the ball into a window he should not is also a quarterback who never throws it into the one he should. The Giants are not starting him to be careful. They need him to be Jameis.

The Job

Dart Is Out. McCarthy Is Waiting. Jameis Is Winning.

How a backup became the most important player on a first-place team.

None of this was the plan. Jaxson Dart was supposed to be the story of the Giants’ season until the first drive of their Week 2 Monday night game against the Rams, when he was hit by several defenders in the air and his left knee bent awkwardly. The diagnosis was a full meniscus tear with MCL and PCL damage, and season-ending surgery. “The season is not over,” John Harbaugh said, “but it is for him.”

Winston has started both games since and won both. The front office still made a move: the Giants sent a fifth-round pick for JJ McCarthy, a former top-ten selection. McCarthy was active on Sunday and did not play.

Harbaugh’s verdict on Sunday was measured and, for Winston, encouraging. “I thought he played well except for the turnovers, and that’s the thing he’s going to tell you,” the coach said. “Those are throws he can make. I mean, he can make in his sleep.”

Winston’s own verdict was less measured, which is the point of him. “I’m heating up,” he said, “and I’m starting to get better, better, and better.” And then, the line that explains why he is so easy to root for: “Right now, I get to smile and say I’m the starting quarterback for the New York Football Giants.”

QB · New York Giants · Starter since Week 3 · “Famous Jameis”

He signed with New York on a two-year deal in March 2025 and spent most of a season as a backup. Now Jaxson Dart is out for the year, the front office has traded for a former top-ten pick, and the Giants are in sole possession of first place with Winston under center.

His head coach put Sunday plainly: “I thought he played well except for the turnovers.” Three touchdowns and a first-place team say the rest.

The case for: two starts, two wins, sole possession of the division, and JJ McCarthy active but unused on Sunday.

The case against: the Giants gave up a fifth-round pick for McCarthy for a reason, and two second-half-swinging interceptions are exactly the kind of thing that gets a backup a series. The meter is editorial judgment, not a projection.

Fantasy

From 4.7 Points to 18 in Seven Days

The Jameis Effect is a fantasy football phenomenon too.

In standard scoring, four points per passing touchdown and minus two per interception, Winston’s Sunday line is worth 18.0 points, up from 4.7 in Week 3, both before rushing. Two interceptions cost his managers four points. Three touchdowns paid them twelve. That trade is the entire fantasy profile: in a two-quarterback or superflex league he is a weekly start with a volatile floor, and the volatility is weighted toward the good side as long as Harbaugh lets him keep throwing.

Malik Nabers is the other beneficiary. A quarterback who throws into tight windows is a receiver’s best friend, and Nabers’ six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown is what happens when the ball comes out aggressively.

The Gear

A Quarterback Worth Numbering

Some players you wear for the stats. Jameis you wear for the experience.

If Sunday made you want a Jameis Winston shirt, a Jameis Winston t shirt built on original artwork fits a player like him better than another name-and-number print. Planet Euphoria’s Jameis Winston collection is hand-drawn, printed to order in Schenectady, New York, and numbered individually out of a run of 500 on 100 percent ring-spun cotton. Thirty-five dollars, ivory or black, youth small through 4X-large. When the 500 sell, the design retires.

The Bottom Line

Three touchdowns, two interceptions, 36 points, and the first time since November 2015 that the Giants have the NFC East to themselves. Both picks turned straight into Arizona points, and both times Winston walked back out and answered. That is the Jameis Effect: the floor and the ceiling arrive in the same game, and when the ceiling is high enough, nobody remembers the floor.

Jameis Winston and the Giants: Your Questions, Answered

How did Jameis Winston play against the Cardinals?
Winston completed 18 of 29 passes for 250 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in the Giants’ 36-24 win on October 4, 2026. His touchdowns went to Malachi Fields for 12 yards, Malik Nabers for 25 and Theo Johnson for 11, the last one a go-ahead score in the third quarter after his second interception had given Arizona the lead.
Why is Jameis Winston starting for the Giants?
Jaxson Dart suffered a full meniscus tear, along with MCL and PCL damage, in his left knee on the first drive of the Giants’ Week 2 Monday night game against the Rams, and needed season-ending surgery. Winston took over in Week 3 and has won both starts. The Giants have since traded a fifth-round pick for JJ McCarthy, who was active but did not play on Sunday.
Has any quarterback thrown 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in one season?
Only one. Jameis Winston did it with Tampa Bay in 2019, throwing for 5,109 yards with 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. He was the first quarterback in NFL history to reach 30 of each in the same season, and no one has done it since.
